Virginia General Assembly

The General Assembly which met at Jamestown in 1619 was a natural child of the Virginia Company of London who was financing voyages to the Virgina Colony. Some of the planters residing along the James River were stockholders and had a voice in management. Thus, it followed that the plantations should elect their representatives to the local governing body. Effectually, the freely elected parliament of a self-governing people came into existence.
