It was advertised and sold in Atlanta during 1918. Do you imagine yourself taking one of the first rides? There are so many interesting stories to learn about our ancestors. Just as we seem to speed quickly along the avenue of life, embracing new ideas and transitioning through new technology, our ancestors also had a grip on the changing fads. 1916 was the last days of Queen Elizabeth’s staunch Victorian Era, and our relatives stepped up for the changes. You don’t really think that your ancestors were boring old trolls who did little to bring out changes, do you? When tracing, it is always a good idea to read the newspapers of their times and see what was happening. Also, 8 Genealogy Websites features genealogy databases in 7 States! Two Women to Jamestown

Among the new arrivals between 1608 and 1610 were two women, Mistress Forrest and her maid, Ann Burras. Several months later, in the church at Jamestown, the maid was married to one of the settlers, John Laydon, a carpenter by trade. This marriage has been ranked as "the first recorded English marriage on the soil of the United States." Their child, Virginia, born the next year, was the first to be born at Jamestown
The First Houses in Jamestown

During the spring months of 1608, the settlers cut cedar logs and prepared "clapboards" to be returned in a Supply vessel and sold in England. Later, when settlers discovered some golden colored soil, there seems to have been a mild "old rush." This all delayed early spring clearing and planting, and boded ill for the coming summer when Smith undertook additional explorations.
Three Supply Vessels in Jamestown, 1608 to 1610

Captain Newport sailed the first Supply ship to Jamestown during January of 1608. It brought food, equipment, instructions, and news from home. Actually, two ships of the supply had left England together, but the second did not reach Virginia until April. Shortly afterwards, fire swept through the fort, consuming habitations, provisions, ammunition, some of the palisades and the books of Reverend Robert Hunt. This was a serious blow in the face of winter weather. Later, a blockhouse was built at the isthmus which connected the Island to the mainland for better control of the Indians, and a new fort was erected on a tidal creek across the river from Jamestown. With the help of Captain Newport and his sailors, the church, storehouse, palisades and cabins were partially rebuilt before he sailed again for England early in April. It is said that much more could have been done had he not consumed so many days in a pompous visit and lengthy negotiations with the wily Powhatan. Then, too, the ships had to be loaded for the return voyage, for the London backers were calling loudly for profitable produce.
Where to Find Tidbits of Information concerning Jamestown Settlers

Genealogy Tips from Jeannette Holland Austin

The early vessels to Jamestown delivered mostly male settlers. It was not until later that women were brought over for the purpose of marriage. The wife of my own ancestor, Gabriel Holland, was killed in the massacre of 1622. This is probably the situation for other ancestors as well. He then married a widow whose husband had been slain and there a slight mention of his taking up the lot previously owned by her husband. However, two or three years later, he returned to London and married the third time. Gabriel was appointed one of the Burgesses for Jamestown, and made several trips to London on the business of the colony. One issue they were discussing is the taxing of tobacco, and Gabriel was sent to have an audience with King Charles I. This was a period when the king was not convening Parliament, so Gabriel's attempts to settle this tax, went unresolved. I found some mention of this in the English Court of Chancery. We have to remember that the colony was subjugated to the King, and that the King's business was tended by Burgesses. The accounts of the House of Burgesses published in the Virginia Magazine is another instance where tidbits of information can be gleaned and studied.
Good Reasons to Personally Examine Old Documents

Genealogy Tips by Jeannette Holland Austin

People write some interesting stuff in their wills! Before we had the Internet, a convenient method of discovering the heirs was to read "abstracts" of wills, estates, deeds and marriages which were published in book. This tremendous undertaking by the authors of genealogy was insurmountable in brilliance. It saved the researcher a great deal of time. But now that we have access Internet to full documents on Georgia Pioneers. Reading the entire document is a boon to genealogists for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the heirs are mentioned with the details of their specific inheritance, and relationship to the deceased. Second, some of our previous assumptions taken from the abstracts can be clarified. Third, we can discover new information. And fourth, all the details are included, some of which the abstracter did not include because it was not clearly discernible on the old microfilm equipment. _____________________________________________________________________________ Images of Old Wills and Estates are available on (8 Genealogy Websites - includes records in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia).
The Second Voyage to Virginia from Plymouth, England

The second English vessel known to have been built in North America was also a pinnace. The members of the second colony to depart to Virginia left Plymouth, England on the last day of May 1607 was commanded by Captain George Popham. The vessel anchored in the mouth of the Kennebec River at a place called "Sagadahoc in Virginia". There they set up fortifications which they called Fort St. George. After finishing the fort, the shipwright known as Digby of London, framed a pretty pinnace of about thirty tons which they called "Virginia" This little vessel is known to have made two voyages across the Atlantic. The colony of George Popham which established Fort St. George in 1607, has been excavated and it was determined that the colonists abandoned the fort after a year of occupation and the site appears to have been vacant for two centuries. The site plan of the fort was drawn by one of the Popham colonists, a cartographer named John Hunt.

While genealogists work to preserve their family histories and relate the interesting tales to their children and grandchildren, there is a disruption of traditions and beliefs encircling the globe. Every generation has treasured its ways, from the way we speak, walk, dress and act, to or spiritual beliefs. And yet there has been no American tradition so valued as our personal freedom, and the right to worship our God. This generation has gone awry with its preference for the re-written history of the conduct and actions of our ancestors. Yet, somewhere back in time, in the past of the disruptor's, lies some very startling facts concerning themselves and their ancestors.

If they traced back several generations of their lineage and found some brave patriots who loved freedom and the right to worship so much they they gave their lives and fortunes for it, perhaps a greater appreciation of former generations would awaken them from the deep sleep of ignorance and stupidity.

Perhaps it is up to the old folks to restore peace, love and appreciation for those who came before us by writing more articles and telling more stories on the Internet of how the ancestors sacrificed everything for their posterity! Then, while the disruptor's are wasting their youth spouting anger, marching in parades, littering our streets, vandalizing homes and stores, etc., we will be writing the history of today, of how much we still care for our traditions and values.
In 1649, the local authorities decided to hold markets every week in Jamestown, which was one form of a familiar English fair. English fairs were the oldest of the trade institutions and were encouraged during an age when the population was sparse. People could come together from a distance and exchange their products. The Jamestown markets were restricted to Wednesdays and Saturdays of each week and the boundaries of a site were carefully laid off. The market place in Jamestown extended from the eastern side of the James River for two miles. Source: Hening's Statutes, vol. In tracing these families, I have discovered a number of persons, before and after the 1622 massacre particularly, who returned to London to acquire a wife. First, disease and rat poison from the vessels caused a rank loss of life and the later massacre, of course, killed off a number of families. The London Company investors added this provision to their charter. Nearly 400 persons were lain in the colony on March 22, 1622.
Throughout the ages, mankind has recorded history in a number of ways, viz: clay tablets, brass plates, papyrus, cement, etc. The case of erecting monuments is universal and dates back to ancient times.

The cuneiform writing of the Sumerians, Egyption hierglyphs, Cretan hieroglyphs, Chinese hieroglyphs, Indus script and the Olmec script of Mesoamerica are but a few methods used in the preservation of historical events and populations. Not to mention monuments, gravestones, footstones, markers, obelisks, plaques and cairns which were included in ancient cities, towns and kingdoms across the map. And America came along and adopted that same practice.

Once, while visitiing the Gwinnett County Court House, I noticed a monument in front which told about the militia driving an Indians war party from Georgia in 1834. The list of those who fought included the children of one of my ancestors! For years I had searched for the names of his children and here was the date and place of an event which recorded their deaths! The monuments are a great help to remembering historical events which occurred in other times.

That makes the vandelism and destruction of our historical monuments as one of the worst atrocities in all the history of mankind on this earth!
If you are unable to receive inter-library loans to your local library from the Virginia State Archives, this is due to staff issues. They do not have anyone to pull the microfilm. May I suggest the Washington Memorial Library in Macon? They have an impressive collection of Virginia microfilm, including some of the oldest county records. This library is the best for genealogists in the State of Georgia and has an amazing collection for most Southern States. An online source of the oldest Virginia records is Virginia Pioneers

Needless to say that irregardless of the genealogy available on the Internet, we need to support our local libraries. The genealogy collection of every library is different as it includes data shared by working genealogists and genealogical societies. Also, the inter-library loan system helps to supplement the genealogy records of any given library. I cannot tell you how often I have visited the Switzer Library in Cobb County and discovered microfilm on loan which I needed to view! The key is to ask the librarian in the Georgian Room.
The process is like unto an intricate puzzle of small pieces which do not seem to fit anywhere. Everyone has scaps of genealogical data on their surnames. But how do we find something more specific, something which will connect to our information? The answers lie in discovering the people in the neighborhood where your ancestor resided during a certain time period. They all connect, you know, whether as friends or relatives. The American past can be subdivided into eras and locations which is occupied by a specific group of people. The task is to assemble each family in family group sheets, regardless of whether they are in your direct line. If they have the same surname, a good practice is to consider them relatives and the only way to establish this is with family group sheets. Then, the marriages on these sheets help to establish relationships. It is a cousin thing. The sheets provide a place to enter the little scaps of paper. Eventually, we understand more about the relationships, which helps to eliminate certain people. Image sitting upon a front porch in a rural area. It is spring and the land is being plowed for planting. A neighbor has come to assist. On Sunday, this same neighbor is at church with his wife and children. Who do you suppose your children will marry? The answer is someone in this setting. That is why the names of witnesses to documents, such as deeds, marriages and old wills is so important. As the community grows and documents are recorded at the local court house, the neighborhood is being documented.

The modern age of technology is wonderful! However, we must not rely upon genealogy programs to find the ancestors. Everyone knows that tracing the family roots is a tedious process involving many long years of hard work. To the new researchers out there: one cannot just sign up somewhere and expect to find the family tree. Should you think that this is the case, the work itself is riddled with errors. For this reason connecting to a World Tree is not advisable. One must keep their errors to themselves, not share them! That is, until they are resolved with factual evidence. Otherwise, in the end, that World Tree will be a trash dump no one wants to tackle. Already the term "junk genealogy" has emerged and cleanup is near impossible. The computer programs of today merging data are not cutting it. Hence, human beings must continue to control genealogical research and maintain it privately on a simple computer program.

The Wreck of the "Sea Venture"

On July 28, a violent storm arose which separated the "Sea Venture" from the rest of the fleet was described by William Strachey, secretary to Lord De La Warr and passenger on the ship as a dreadful tempest and the tail of a West Indies hurricane which laster four days and nights. The storm drove the ship toward the dangerous and dreaded islands of Bermuda. Nearing the shore, the ship was caught between rocks as in a vise and held there while all the one hundred and fifty persons reached the shore in safety. As soon as they were conveniently settled, after the landing, the long boat was fitted up in the fashion of a pinnace with a little deck made of the hatches of the wrecked ship, so close that no water could enter, and with a crew of six sailors, using sails and oars, Thomas Whittingham, the cape merchant, and Henry Ravens, the master's mate, as pilot, the boat sailed for Virginia. It was hoped, when news reached Jamestown of the safe landing of the passengers from the wrecked "Sea Venture" on Bermuda, that a ship or pinnace from the fleet in Virginia would be sent to take them home, but the long boat was never heard from again. Note: The account of William Strachey led to the writing of "The Tempest" by Shakespeare.
