The early residents of Jamestown were mostly males. Therefore, the Virginia Company of London sent maidens into the colony beginning in 1620. These maidens could choose their husbands, and this method appeared to work until the Indian massacre of 1621/1622. This brutal attack by the savages killed off many of the residents, including women. Afterwards, whenever the opportunity arose, colonists would return to London to marry again.
