Punishment for Immorality
The public sentiment of the Colony was not content with leaving the punishment of immoral acts to the justice of the church and a general statute was passed imposing heavy fines upon all white men who were guilty of criminal intimacy with female slaves. At that time, the number of slaves in Virginia did not exceed several hundred. Source: Hening's Statutes, Vol. II, p. 170.
