The Virginia Cure
The author of "Virginia Cure" written about 1666 declared that as a result of his own personal observation, that the Virginians were "naturally of beautiful and comely persons, and generaly more ingenious spirits" than the people of England. The traveller, Hugh Jones who visited the colony many years later, was equally flattering of the manly self-reliance fostered by the independent life of the plantation, manners, and a natural sprightness of mind.
