Death of Pocahontas

John Rolfe
John Rolfe took his wife to England on a request of the Virginia Company to conduct a survewy  of the lands that were settled.  While in London, he and his wife, Pocahontas, became ill. "The George" left England mid-March of 1617 carrying Pocahontas and her infant son. She became ill and so the vessel put in at Gravesend. The English physicians went to work to cure her with blood-letting while the Indian priests howled, shoted and did violent gestures.  By the end of March she was dead. Her body was taken to St. George's Church where she was buried with Christian rites.
