"Jack of the Feather"

The war captain who was killed was Nemattanow, a great warrior held in much esteem among the Oppenchancanough tribes, so much so that they believed him to be invulnerable and immortal because he had fought so many conflicts and escaped untouched from them all. He was also a very cunning fellow and took great pride in preserving and increasing their superstitutions in him. He would often dress himself up with feathers which caused the English to nickname him Jack of the Feather. Nemattanow came upon the private settlement of one Morgan and persuaded Morgan to go with him to Pamunky to dispose of tseveral toys. At last Morgan yielded to the persuasion, but wa sno more heard of. It was believed that Nemattanow killed him by the way and took away his treasure. Especially when, a few days later, Nemattanow returned to the same house with Morgan's cap upon his head. He found two boys there, asking for their master. He told them that Morgan was dead. They recognized the cap and tried to take Nettanow before a justice of the peace, but he refused to go and very insolently abused them. At that point, the boys shot him down, and as they were carrying him to the governor, he died. As he was dying, he earnestly pressed the boys to promise him two things. First, that they would not tell how he was killed; and, secondly, that they would bury him among the English in hope that this burial would conceal his death from his own nation.
