Jamestown was founded on 14 May 1607 as the first permanent settlement in the Virginia colony. The local Indians were unfriendly and performed raids in the area which ultimately resulted in the massacre of 1622 covering the entire Virginia peninsula. The purpose was to wipe out all white settlers.
